At a former job, a well-known and high ranking creative leader repeated a long-winded racist joke about a Mexican construction worker in a meeting in front of our entire creative department. As (likely) the only Latinx person in the room, I sat there in stunned silence, gasping for air.
Though I was ashamed that I didn’t stand up to him, from that day forward, I decided that I wouldn’t be silent anymore. I decided to get involved in diversity and inclusion groups and vowed to use creativity to tell stories about marginalized cultures and work to increase representation for black and brown people on both sides of the camera.
For that reason, this was a dream project. Working with a mostly Latinx team and some committed white allies, we created My People, My Power a campaign that celebrates the collective, diverse spirit that makes our community so special. We wanted to amplify silenced voices inside our own community — that of the Afro-Latinx, undocumented people, Latinas, and Queer Latinx folks (to name a few) — and share their powerful stories with our massive user base.
The films racked up well over 5 million views, sparked a lot of conversation, and crucially, showed our users that Latinx voices are an essential part of our world. (Plus, they feature a few shots of my aubelita, who is the 💫 of my family).
